Principles of Ergonomics

December 9-11, 2024

In-person: Portland Oregon


Principles of Ergonomics covers the use of ergonomic principles to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to musculoskeletal and nerve disorders. Course topics include work physiology, anthropometry, musculoskeletal disorders, use of video display terminals, and risk factors such as vibration, temperature, material handling, repetition, and lifting and patient transfers in health care.

Workplace Mental Health Support Training for Managers

The Workplace Mental Health Support Training for Managers is a unique training course, designed specifically for leaders and has proven to deliver measurable results that have a lasting impact on employee mental health within organizations like yours. 


From now until Dec. 31, 2024, OccHealthSci is offering the training at reduced rates: 


  • Public/Non-Profit Organizations residing in Oregon: Free - usually $100/seat

  • Public/Non-Profit Organizations outside of Oregon: $50/seat - usually $100

  • Commercial Organizations: $75/seat - usually $150 


Additionally, the price for larger organizations with their own learning management system is now $25,000. This option allows you access to the complete training for unlimited use for up to 5 years.  Email supportiveworkplaces@ohsu.edu for more information.

Oregon Healthy Workforce Center

The Oregon Healthy Workforce Center recently published its 2024 Annual Report. The annual report highlights Center research, impact, and the many ways in which the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center supports the health, safety and well-being of the workforce in Oregon and beyond.

Occupational Public Health/OR-FACE Programs

The Oregon Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (OR-FACE) Program recently published a fatality investigation report that examines contributing factors and lessons learned from a lumber mill employee who was fatally struck by a forklift. This report offers best practice recommendations to help prevent this kind of incident from reoccurring.

Recipients of the 2023 W. Kent and Billie F. Anger Impact Awards for Research 

The Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences has named the recipients of the prestigious W. Kent and Billie F. Anger Impact Awards for Research. Professor Emily (Yueng-hsiang) Huang, Ph.D. is the recipient of the Impact Award for Applied Research. Associate Professor Saurabh Thosar, Ph.D. received the impact award Impact Award for Basic/Clinical Research. Read more about this year’s Anger Impact Award recipients


Work around the clock: How work hours induce social jetlag and sleep deficiency 

A recent article co-authored by Institute affiliate faculty member Dr. Andrew McHill explores the detrimental effects of shift work and irregular schedules on sleep and health. The authors discuss common practices like late-night work and early start times, which contribute to sleep disruption. McHill et. al. advocate for improved sleep hygiene and recovery strategies, such as melatonin use, to mitigate the adverse health outcomes associated with disrupted circadian rhythms.
